Fall in the Brainerd Lakes Area: Your Guide to the Best Events, Festivals & Up North Fun in 2026
There’s something special about fall in the Brainerd Lakes Area.
The summer crowds begin to slow down, the mornings turn crisp, and the trees surrounding our lakes trade their summer greens for shades of gold, orange and red. Add in local fall festivals, Oktoberfests, art crawls, barbecue, pumpkin carving, live music and some of the best scenic drives of the year, and you have a pretty convincing reason to plan one more Up North getaway.
And if you ask us, fall is one of the B.L.A.’s best-kept secrets.
As locals, we spend plenty of time exploring the communities surrounding our vacation homes, so we’ve rounded up some of the best fall events in the Brainerd Lakes Area for 2026, including happenings in Pequot Lakes, Nisswa, Crosslake, Breezy Point, Brainerd/Baxter, Gull Lake, Pine River, Walker and beyond.
Grab a sweatshirt, order something pumpkin-flavored and start planning your fall trip Up North.
September 5–6, 2026 | 9:00 AM–4:00 PM
Kick off September with a scenic drive and a little local art.
The 19th Annual Arts Off 84 Art Crawl stretches along Highway 84 between Pine River and Longville, bringing together 100 artists and makers across six locations. You’ll find everything from pottery and paintings to jewelry, woodworking, fiber arts and handcrafted pieces—all surrounded by the beginnings of Minnesota’s fall scenery.
Admission is free, making this an easy addition to a Labor Day weekend adventure.
Local tip: Don’t rush this one. Half the fun is enjoying the drive between stops and exploring Pine River and Longville along the way.

Fall fun + puppies? That’s a pretty easy yes.
The Babinski Foundation is celebrating its 10th anniversary alongside its fifth annual Fall Festival, and they’re making the 2026 celebration a big one.
The day kicks off with a 5K Wilderness Trek and puppy yoga, followed by a free pancake breakfast. From there, expect an afternoon filled with festival activities, food trucks, live music, an apple pie baking contest, pedal tractor pull and plenty more.
Live music runs throughout the day, with Russ Parish and The Lone Oaks closing things out from 4:00–7:00 PM.
Many activities and general admission are free, with proceeds from select activities supporting the shelter’s work caring for stray and abandoned animals.
September 12–13, 2026
For a little small-town Minnesota charm, make your way north to Pine River for Heritage Days.
The annual celebration is one of the community’s signature fall traditions and makes a great excuse to explore downtown Pine River, take a walk along the Paul Bunyan State Trail and enjoy the changing colors around the Pine River area.
Pair your visit with lunch downtown and you’ve got yourself a pretty great fall day trip.
September 19, 2026 | Downtown Nisswa
If your ideal fall day involves barbecue, live music and wandering through one of our favorite Up North towns, put this one on the calendar.
The 51st Annual Nisswa Fall Festival returns alongside the 21st Annual Smokin’ Hot BBQ Challenge, filling downtown Nisswa with fall activities all day long.
Start the morning with breakfast benefiting the Nisswa Fire Department, then make your way through activities including a bean bag tournament, bocce tournament, KIDZONE, Fall Artisan & Crafters Market and live entertainment.
And then there’s the barbecue.
Teams compete to see who can turn out the best ribs, and once judging wraps up, the public gets a chance to taste the creations too. The festivities continue into the evening with an outdoor concert featuring Wyld Ryce.
Come hungry.
September 24–26, 2026
Few events say “fall in the B.L.A.” quite like Crosslake Days.
With fall colors as the backdrop, this three-day celebration takes over Crosslake with activities, food, shopping and entertainment throughout town.
Favorites returning in 2026 include the Lost Chili Pepper Hunt, Outdoor Arts & Crafts Fair, Chili Cook-Off, Cider & Candlelight Tour, cornhole tournament and street dance.
On Saturday, the Outdoor Arts & Crafts Fair brings more than 80 vendors to The Log Church from 9:00 AM–4:00 PM. Then, from noon–3:00 PM, make your way around town during the Chili Cook-Off as local businesses serve up their best recipes and compete for the coveted Golden Ladles.
It’s one of those weekends where you’ll want to park the car, wander around and see where the day takes you.
September 26, 2026 | Pequot Lakes
A longtime local Oktoberfest tradition is getting a bigger stage this fall!
After years of hosting Snarktoberfest at Snarky’s Hideout, the celebration is expanding into OKBOBBERFEST, a new city-wide Oktoberfest celebration in Pequot Lakes. What started as a favorite gathering at Snarky’s is heading into town for an even bigger day of food, drinks, music and community fun.
Snarky’s will be joined by some familiar local brewery friends, including Big Axe Brewing, Rendezvous Brewing and Cuyuna Brewing, with food trucks and Pequot Lakes businesses joining the festivities throughout town and the park.
And, of course, there will be live music. Norman’s Bait & Tackle Choir and Third Wheel are currently set to help provide the soundtrack for the celebration.
With OKBOBBERFEST happening the same Saturday as Crosslake Days, September 26 is shaping up to be an especially fun weekend to stay in the Pequot Lakes and Whitefish Chain area. Spend part of the day exploring Crosslake, then head into Pequot Lakes for Oktoberfest festivities—or make OKBOBBERFEST the centerpiece of your Saturday.
Local tip: This is the first year of the expanded city-wide celebration, so keep an eye out for additional activities and participating businesses as September gets closer.

October 3, 2026
Prost!
The annual Gull Lake Oktoberfest returns October 3 for another day of fall fun around one of the Brainerd Lakes Area’s most popular lakes.
The event is organized through Gull Lake Events, whose community events have raised more than $400,000 for local charities over the years—so you can enjoy the festivities while supporting a great local cause.
Better yet? Early October around Gull Lake often means crisp air, changing leaves and some seriously beautiful Up North scenery.
October 3, 2026 | 2:00 PM–11:30 PM
Looking for an excuse to make the drive north to Walker? Here it is.
Held at the Moondance Fairgrounds just east of Walker, the Harvest Moon Festival combines beer and wine tasting, food and live entertainment into one big fall celebration.
The 2026 entertainment lineup includes Timmy Haus followed by The Fabulous Armadillos in the MDJ Saloon.
This one leans more toward the grown-ups, making it a fun addition to a couples’ weekend or friends’ getaway Up North.
October 16-17, 2026 | MEA Weekend
Crosslake knows how to do fall right, and Oktoberfest is another great example of the community coming together for a classic Up North celebration.
Expect a festive mix of seasonal food, local beer, live music and family-friendly activities as Crosslake businesses and organizations help bring a little Bavarian flavor to the heart of lake country. It’s the kind of laid-back, walk-around event that pairs perfectly with peak fall colors and a weekend exploring the Whitefish Chain area.
Because timing can vary year to year, be sure to check the official event page for the most up-to-date 2026 details.
October 16–17, 2026 | MEA Weekend
If you’re up for a fall road trip toward the Cuyuna Lakes area, Ruttger’s Oktoberfest is well worth adding to your weekend plans.
This longtime fall celebration at Ruttger’s Bay Lake Resort brings a taste of Bavaria to lake country with a festive weekend of German-inspired food, live music, shopping, family activities and plenty of Oktoberfest fun.
The drive toward Deerwood is part of the experience, too. Mid-October is a beautiful time to explore this side of the Brainerd Lakes Area, and it’s easy to turn the outing into a full fall day by pairing Oktoberfest with a scenic drive through the Cuyuna Lakes area.
Local tip: Make a day of it! Explore Deerwood and nearby Crosby while you’re in the area, or take a detour through the Cuyuna Country State Recreation Area for even more fall scenery.
October 16–18, 2026 | MEA Weekend
MEA weekend and fall in the Brainerd Lakes Area are a pretty perfect match.
Breezy Point Resort is celebrating the long weekend with its Northwoods Fall Festival, featuring a lineup of classic autumn activities including horse-drawn hayrides, pumpkin carving, face painting, bonfires and s’mores, fall photo opportunities, games and even a Paul Bunyan lookalike contest.
Adults can get in on the fun too, with beer sampling and seasonal drink specials.
And because this is Minnesota and October weather likes to keep us guessing, indoor pools, hot tubs, an arcade and golf simulators offer plenty of backup entertainment.
Fall events don’t stop with the big festivals.
October brings plenty of Halloween fun to the Brainerd and Baxter area, with haunted attractions, pumpkin activities, fall markets, trick-or-treat events and family-friendly celebrations popping up throughout the month.
Annual favorites in the area have included the Northland Arboretum Haunted Trail, Haunted Hidden Hollows at Paul Bunyan Land, fall farm markets, pumpkin activities and Downtown Brainerd Halloween festivities.
Because dates and schedules for many Halloween events are announced closer to October, we’ll continue updating this guide as additional 2026 Brainerd Lakes Area Halloween events are confirmed.
One of the best parts about visiting the Brainerd Lakes Area in fall is that you don’t actually need an event to fill your weekend.
In between festivals, leave yourself a little room to explore.
Take a drive around the Whitefish Chain. Wander the shops in downtown Nisswa. Bike a stretch of the Paul Bunyan State Trail. Grab coffee in Pequot Lakes. Stop for lunch in Crosslake. Head toward Gull Lake as the leaves begin to turn. Or simply spend an afternoon back at the cabin with nowhere you need to be.
Fall Up North is a little slower—and that’s exactly the point.
That’s the million-dollar fall question.
Peak color varies from year to year depending on temperatures, rainfall and other conditions, but late September through early October is typically a great window to plan a fall color getaway in the Brainerd Lakes Area.
Northern areas around Walker and Pine River can begin changing earlier, while areas farther south around Brainerd and Baxter may hold onto their color a little longer.
Our advice? Don’t get too hung up on hitting one “perfect” weekend. The transition itself is beautiful, and September through much of October brings plenty of reasons to head north.
Summer may get most of the attention around here, but don’t pack away your Up North plans just yet.
Fall brings a completely different side of lake country: quieter mornings, colorful shorelines, cool nights around the fire and a full calendar of festivals and community traditions that make this area feel like home.
Whether you’re coming for Nisswa Fall Festival, Crosslake Days, Gull Lake Oktoberfest, a fall color tour, MEA weekend or simply a quiet cabin weekend, we’d love to help you find the perfect home base.
