WHERE TO STAY, WHERE TO EAT, AND HOW TO PLAN A WEEKEND FOR TWO UP NORTH.
The best couples getaways don’t need a packed itinerary. Give us a cozy cabin that feels like your own, a dinner worth getting dressed up for, slow coffee in the morning, and nowhere you absolutely have to be.
That’s kind of the magic of the Brainerd Lakes Area: it’s close enough for an easy weekend away, but once you’re here, it feels like you’ve actually escaped.
We’re Book the B.L.A., the local team behind Woods to Water Vacation Homes. We live, work, and play right here in the Brainerd Lakes Area, so when we say we know how to plan a good lake-country getaway, we mean it. Couples stay with us for anniversaries, birthdays, spontaneous weekends away, and those very necessary “we need to get out of town” trips.
So if you’re planning a weekend for two, consider this your local guide to doing it right—from where to stay and where to eat to the little extras that make a getaway feel like a getaway.

OVERVIEW:
The Brainerd Lakes Area is an easy romantic escape from Minneapolis, with quiet lakes, cozy cabins, supper clubs, spas, and plenty of ways to slow down together. Book the B.L.A. offers couples-friendly stays near Breezy Point and Emily, plus concierge add-ons like private chefs, charcuterie, yoga, mobile sauna experiences, and spa services. For date night, local favorites include Bar Harbor Supper Club, Norway Ridge Supper Club, Antlers Kitchen + Wine Bar, and Dennis Drummond Wine Co., while Grand View Lodge, Breezy Point Resort, and Madden’s all offer spa options. Fall is an especially good time to visit for colorful scenery, quieter lakes, and a more relaxed pace.
When you only have a weekend, you don’t want to spend half of it getting there. The Brainerd Lakes Area is about two hours north of Minneapolis, which means you can head up Friday afternoon and still have time to settle in before sunset.
Once you’re here, the pace is yours. With more than 460 lakes within 25 miles of Brainerd, there’s no shortage of quiet bays, wooded shorelines, and places where the soundtrack is mostly water, wind, and the occasional loon.
Towns like Nisswa, Crosslake, Pequot Lakes, and Breezy Point keep coffee, shops, and a good dinner close enough when you want them. Our guide to where to stay in the Brainerd Lakes Area can help you choose the area that fits your kind of weekend.
For a couples trip, bigger isn’t always better. A five-bedroom lake house might be perfect for the whole family, but for two? Give us cozy, private, and easy.
A few things we’d look for:
Two stays come up again and again when couples ask us where we’d book.
That depends on what kind of weekend you have in mind.
Our Gull Lake vs. Whitefish Chain comparison goes deeper, but here’s the quick version for couples.
Pelican Lake is our pick when the goal is to really slow down. Calm water, beautiful sunsets, and Breezy Point nearby for dinner make it an easy place to settle in and stay awhile. Browse stays in the Pelican Lake area.
The Whitefish Chain is better for couples who like a little exploring mixed into their downtime. With 14 connected lakes, you can make an afternoon out of cruising the chain, then head into Crosslake for dinner or a walk around town.
Gull Lake is the social one. Classic supper clubs, resort spas, and plenty happening along the shoreline make it especially easy to turn a boat day into date night.
A few places we send couples most:
Or skip going out completely.
Our concierge can arrange a private chef to cook at your cabin or have an artisan charcuterie board waiting for a night by the fire.
For even more options, browse our Brainerd Lakes restaurant guide and fine dining picks.
One local tip: many supper clubs keep seasonal hours, so check ahead before making the drive.
There’s something about a spa appointment that immediately makes a weekend feel more like an actual getaway.
Two local resort spas are especially good for couples:
Prefer not to leave the cabin? Even better.
Book the B.L.A. guests can request private yoga at the rental, have a mobile sauna delivered on-site, or arrange spa services through our concierge.
If a Saturday spa appointment is high on your list, book it early, especially in summer and around the holidays.
If we had to choose one season for couples, we’d go with late September through October.
The birch and maple turn gold and red, the lakes get quieter, the evenings are cool enough for a fire, and rates drop below peak summer. Our fall getaway guide has more ideas for planning around fall color.
Winter is a very close second. Snow outside, a fireplace going, nowhere you have to be—that’s a pretty good weekend. At River End, you can even grab the snowshoes and head out along the property. Check our winter guide if you want to add a few activities to the calendar.
Spring is wonderfully quiet and a good choice if having the lake mostly to yourselves sounds ideal.
And then there’s summer: long sunsets, patio dinners, boat days, and peak lake season. The best cabins can book months ahead, so if you’re dreaming about July, plan early.
You don’t need to schedule every hour of a couples weekend. In fact, we’d recommend the opposite.
Here’s a simple two-night plan that leaves plenty of room for doing absolutely nothing. If you want to pack a little more in, check out our full weekend itinerary for the Brainerd Lakes Area.
Friday: Head north after lunch. Arrange grocery pickup ahead of time so the fridge is stocked when you arrive, and add a charcuterie board if you really want to start the weekend right. Walk the property, pour something you like, and light the first fire of the trip.
Saturday: Take coffee to the dock or screened porch and let the morning take as long as it takes. Paddle the bay or walk the trails, then head into Nisswa or Crosslake for a late lunch and a little wandering. Spend the afternoon at the spa, get ready for dinner, and settle in at a supper club. Before bed, step outside and look up. The stars are worth it.
Sunday: Make breakfast at the cabin, squeeze in one last paddle or a private yoga session, and take the long way home. A stop at Dennis Drummond Wine Co. near Brainerd for lunch and a bottle for later makes a pretty good ending.
Tell us what you’re celebrating when you book! Our concierge team can help with the details before you arrive, whether that means a stocked fridge, charcuterie waiting at the cabin, a private chef for dinner, or a pontoon reserved for a sunset cruise.
The services are add-ons, so you can make the weekend as simple or as special as you want.
Planning a proposal? Give us a heads-up. We can help you think through the timing and find a quieter spot for the moment. And yes, a dock at sunset is tough to beat.

A few things to know before booking: guests need to be 25 or older, parties aren’t allowed, and quiet hours apply.
For a couples weekend? That usually works out just fine.
